Kaifiyat is based on the syncretic nature of the tabla as a musical instrument and the playing style of Ustad Nizamuddin Khan (d.2000). By recreating early modern forms of poetry, texts through the aesthetics of the Deccani arts of miniature painting, architecture, and music (Kitab i nauras) in the digital. The film unfolds like a kaleidoscope, bringing together six sequences that weave the religious, social and cultural factors together as well as revealing what remains of Nizamuddin and his family as they survive the harsh socio-economic surroundings in the city of Mumbai.
