‘In Search of our Lost Rice Seeds’, 2013, 40 mins is a documentary on the loss of the traditional rice seeds of India.
It documents the farming practices of some of the traditional paddy seed savers in the three states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Through their voices and the voices of scientists, farmers and environmentalists the film traces the destruction of the agro-biodiversity as well as knowledge systems that have eventually led to the crises faced by small farmers in India.
The film takes into account the benefits of traditional rice seeds, in terms of nutrition, increasing the microbial nutrients in the soil when grown in local conditions and the maintenance of ecological balance. It also deals with the corporatisation of the seed sector.
The film won the Best Documentary award in the category –People and Earth/Ecological Success Stories”at the EKOTOPFILM film festival, 2013, at Bratislava, Slovakia.
